tāstium began with a simple desire for everyone to able to cook if they want to. There are so many benefits to home cooking, from saving money to health to just learning a new skill for life, but people don't always get the chance to learn.
Why we built it.
A generation ago, most people learned to cook standing next to someone who already knew how. That’s a fundamentally different experience: someone talks you through it, explains what to look for, tells you when something’s going wrong before it becomes a problem. You watch the food, not a document.
That’s what tāstium is trying to rebuild — a guide for the gap between finding a recipe and actually cooking it well. It also lets you follow your friends and cook their successful dishes, or just see their progress and give them kudos in support.
We feel passionately about making sure people have the skills and confidence to cook well — saving them money and time, and getting genuine pleasure from the process at the same time.
We hold ourselves to the same standard we’d want from a real sous-chef.
Sous will never raise her voice, never contribute to what can already be a stressful process.
“When the foam settles” beats “after four minutes.” Sous will trust your eyes, ears and nose more than a timer.
You give Sous a photo of your finished dish and she will give you honest feedback and tips for next time.
